Over the last 30 days we’ve managed to find few oldies such as famous Geo Sans and Mank Sans by Manfred Klein, but also some newbies such as Jos Buivenga’s Diavlo. You might also be interested in further free fonts we’ve presented recently. Before using the font, don’t forget to read the legal agreement carefully. They change from time to time.

Jos Buivenga, the designer of beautiful typofaces Fontin and Delicious, has released a new freefont, which is called Tallys and can be used for personal and private projects without any restrictions.

Tallys is a font that is one degree slanted and has large caps, a small x-height and long ascenders. It comes with hybrid numbers and a complete character set. The Tallys has one weight and comes only in Roman Style, however, Jos might be thinking about adding other weights and an italic later.

The font is available in Mac & PC (Opentype) formats and can be downloaded here for free.

Usually a simple text entry is sufficient for a navigation bar. However, designer often combine plain text with small “download”-related icons – an example from redhat.de can be found below.

Most arrows have the direction to the bottom or to the right (digitalvisit.de).

The same here (formac.nl).

A more complex solution is presented on camfrog.com, however, the visual presentation is definitely more usable and attractive and – more importantly – the button is easier to find on the page.

This online-shop uses for every offered product a group of accompanying Icons (vso-software.fr)

The support of both Windows, Mac and Linux is usually emphasized by integrating logotypes in the download buttons (pando.com)

Similar visual solution, but different approach – both multilingual release and stable release can be downloaded immediately, without need to view any further web-pages (caminobrowser.org)

Since download buttons are gaining more weight, they are usually placed in the middle of the page and surrounded by a plenty of white space. Trying to achieve the attention of potential customuers, designers use new techniques and colourful solutions. Especially big buttons are trendy. They can be found everywhere.

Summing up, the current trends in web-design present download-elements in a particularly impressive way. Buttons have to catch visitors’ attention and therefore are sometimes not only obtrusive, but even aggressive. The product isn’t hidden, which makes sanes if it is the main aspect a developer is concerned about. Consequently, the place for download-buttons is chosen properly – of couse, in the middle of the page.

• Unified Modeling Language (UML) is a non-proprietary, object modeling and specification language used in software engineering. With various UML-Tools (German version only!) once can create not only small sketches and simple organisation diagrams, but also complex systems and computer models.
• XML/SWF Charts is a simple, yet powerful tool to create attractive web charts and graphs from dynamic XML data. • Microsoft Visio: the Microsoft Office business and technical diagramming program solves every problem you could ever think about. Microsoft Visio is integrated in the Microsoft Office. The price is appropriate for the quality Microsoft Visio delivers.
• Mindjet MindManager is a powerfult software-package which can be used for drawing Mindmaps, Brainstorming-Ideas or organization diagrams.
  Bloggers from Switzerland can get Mindjet for free until the 31st of August 2006 (more in German on SuperDeluxe). All you need is to describe your weblog, provide its URL, choose the language of the Mindjet MindManager in an e-mail you have to send at blog@mindjet.ch. MindManager Basic (Mac and Win) costs 230.84 €, MindManager Pro – 346.84 €.
• SmartDraw is also a powerful Software-package, which is extremely easy-to-use and includes 1000s of professional-looking business graphics that you can modify and make your own. Price: $197.

Web Developer Icons Set

We have noticed Pedja Rusic from Serbia over a year ago, when we presented his icon sets in our free icons round-up. A while ago we contacted him and commissioned the design of icons dedicated to designers and developers. The icons should pay close attention to the smallest details, look original, cool and still remain recognizable.

The result of Pedja’s work is the Web Developer Icons Set, a set of 34 icons designed from scratch; these icons are primarily supposed to be used by bloggers and designers. The icons are available in the resolutions .ico, .icns and .png in various resolutions up to 512×512px. The set contains icons Comments icon, Home, Mail, RSS and user-related icons.

Inspiration behind the design

As usual, here are some insights from the designer himself:

The design of icons for this set was definitely the most difficult one in my career. I never had more trouble while the makin’ was in progress. My computer exploded 2 times, I had several losses in my family, my airport and modem were damaged… etc. The set was supposed to be launched like the year before, but considering all the difficutes that have happend, I consider myself one persistan bastard! Plus I was attacked by a dog in my house while i was doing the set… So I give the most hardest, and mind blowing set of icons I ever made!

WP Smashing WordPress Theme

We are always looking for creative and unusual concepts and we are always glad to support designers and developers to implement the idea and make it available to the public. Just recently we released the ViewPort WordPress Theme that presents the content in a single-page-’viewport’ and showcasing bloggers’ posts in a visually appealing form. Magazeen theme uses drop-down-menus and an automated jQuery-based image showcase and thus makes image manipulation for posts easier and more flexible.

Greg Johnson’s theme WP Smashing is also an example for such kind of themes. The main goal of the theme was to display WordPress posts in calendar format. The theme is widget-ready, WordPress 2.7 compatible, has an integrated configurable calendar functionality and a configurable contact form. Installation guidelines are provided in the package. The .PSD-source file is included as well.

WP SMASHING started out as an exercise in displaying WordPress posts in calendar format. The uses for this kind of functionality are obvious and I haven’t come across a plugin or theme that accomplished this goal in the manner I was after.

WP SMASHING accomplishes this by way of a companion plugin, written specifically for this theme. Knowing that not everyone will want to display their posts this way, the plugin offers you the ability to choose how you want to display posts on the index and in the archive — using a calendar or a two-column listing of post excerpts (much like Smashing Magazine). If you choose to display posts as a calendar, the titles of each post are displayed for each day. If the title(s) are larger than the relatively small square allotted for a calendar day, a custom scroll bar is shown allowing the user to scroll through your posts.

WP SMASHING is completely widget-ready and features 4 configurable ’side bars’. One of these side bars is the right column — navigation — on every page except for if/when the calendar is displayed. The other 3 side bars are incorporated into footer. Also integrated into the footer is a contact form which includes validation and also includes options in the companion plugin.

Bonus: Café Icon Set

Last year we decided to stop releasing “social” icon setes in 2009, since there were way too many similar sets out there. However, when a beautiful set comes along, it is sometimes really hard to say ‘no’. This is the basic reason why this post also offers the set “Café Icon Set” as bonus to the first set. This set was designed by Enk from Hyderabad, Pakistan especially for Smashing Magazine and its readers. The set contains 9 .png-images in the formats 256×256px, including 8 social icons (Twitter, Flickr, StumbleUpon, Digg, Technorati, Mixx, Delicious, RSS) and Smashing Magazine.
